OPEN FIRE REGULATIONS

Historically, during the month of August, a countywide “BURN BAN” is in affect, which means that only charcoal, white gas or propane can be used.  But, if the level of the “BURN BAN” is moderate, restricted open fires are permitted provided that the below guidelines are followed.

1.      In ground pits must be used!  The pits will be a minimum of 16” deep.

2.      The pits must be lined with cement block, stones or #10 gauge steel.  (An old washing machine tub is the correct depth and width)

3.      The pit can be no larger than 3 feet across.

4.      The ground around the pit must be free of vegetation for a minimum of 12”.

5.      Materials being burned must be kept lower than the sidewalls of the enclosure.

6.      At least 2 five-gallon buckets of water must be on site.

7.      A shovel or rake must be on site.

8.      The fire must be 25 feet from any structure or standing timber.  (This does not include tipis, wall tents, lean-tos, etc.)

9.      One-person age 16 or older that is capable of putting the fire out must be in attendance at all times.

10.  It is only legal to burn natural vegetation or firewood---not even paper is allowed (except for the amount necessary to start a fire).

11.  No lumber or building/demolition debris/material can legally be burned.

12.  Do not burn when winds exceed 7-10 mph.

13.  Do not burn during periods of air stagnation.

In short, be prepared for a “BURN BAN” during our rendezvous.  CWSA wants to make our rendezvous enjoyable and safe for everyone.  We all know that “BURN BANS” can be a nuisance, but with some preplanning and favorable weather conditions we can all enjoy this event.  Please call or e-mail the Bourgeois or Segundo for current “BURN BAN” information prior to arrival on Whidbey Island.
